Heinzel-Mondi-Sappi Award: Call for Nominations (Deadline: 28 February 2020)


Dear ladies and gentlemen!

Since more than 60 years the pulp, paper and biorefinery industry meets annually in the beautiful city of Graz. About 450 representatives from indus-try and research get together to exchange knowl-edge and to strengthen their networks.

From 27 –  28 May 2020, the conference will prove yet again that it is a premier event, where the latest trends and industry developments are discussed: With its extended focus and international format the conference sets trends, especially highlighting the important role of the pulp and paper sector as an increasingly successful operator in the circular bioeconomy helping to mitigate climate change. Of course the conference will continue to address current topics in the pulp and paper industry presented by distinguished speakers. The APV (Association of Academic Paper Engineers Graz) together with the Austrian industry associations ÖZEPA and AUSTROPAPIER invites experts active in industry and research to present current results of their work at the PAPER & BIOREFINERY CONFERENCE 2020.


       Main topic 2020:   PAPER FOR FUTURE! Mitigating Climate Change.

  • Presentations/Best practice examples related to the conference theme: Paper for future! Mitigating climate change.

  • Wood based biorefinery concepts including potential applications, realized projects and research results  

  • Innovative fiber based products and novel applications for pulp, viscose fibers, paper and board (e.g. nanocelluloses, barrier materials, packaging solutions, paper based sensors ...)

  • Industry 4.0 / IIoT applications
  • Advances in chemical pulping, mechanical pulping, recycled fiber production and stock preparation

  • Advances in research in all pulp, paper and biorefinery related fields

  • Projects, ideas and initiatives to strengthen collaboration along the entire wood based value-added chain

  • Practical experience reports by pulp-, paper- and board mill professionals (modernizations, rebuilds, optimization, energy projects...)

  • Improved energy efficiency in the whole pulp and paper production chain

  • Technological innovations in paper and coating machinery (including machine clothing, process and quality control...)

  • New and improved raw materials and chemical additives and their optimal use in the furnish and in coatings

  • Current developments in measurement and control systems

  • Innovative analysis routines and testing methods

  • Innovative management and education concepts

  • Occupational health and safety issues 

When handing in a paper please use the Abstract Submission Form and observe the information and deadlines listed below. From all submitted papers the conference’s program committee will prepare the final program with about 30 presentations, which will be divided in two parallel sessions.

Please note: You are kindly asked to give your presentation in ENGLISH, as no simultaneous translation will be offered.

Suggestion of topic/title, including an informative abstract and all authors. Please use the Abstract Submission Form and add – if desired – a separate abstract (max. 1 page in English, an additional German version is optional).

14 February 2020: Notice of acceptance to the authors.

30 April 2020: Final short version (abstract) due.
English (an additional German version is optional). Approx. 1 page A4, Word-document.

20 May 2020:  Final Presentation due as PPT- and PDF-File.
All presentations will be published online in PDF-format on the conference homepage, which is only accessible for participants of the conference.
